Planning a Business Website? 7 Things to Decide Before You Hire a Designer
वेबसाइट बनवाने से पहले ये 7 बातें तय करें।
Planning a new business website in India? Decide these 7 things first — goals, pages, content, speed, SEO, leads and ownership — to get a site that brings customers.
“Website banwani hai” is where most projects start — and where many go wrong. Without a clear plan, you end up with a site that looks fine but brings no enquiries. Decide these seven things first, and any good designer can build you a website that actually works for your business.
1. What should the website do?
A website is not a digital visiting card. Pick one main goal:
- Get WhatsApp enquiries or calls
- Get appointments or bookings
- Sell products online
- Build trust before a sales meeting
Every page, button and line of text should push visitors towards that one goal.
2. Which pages do you really need?
Most small businesses need fewer pages than they think. A strong starting point:
- Home — who you are, what you do, why trust you
- Services / products — one clear page per main service
- About — your story and your team
- Contact — WhatsApp, phone, map and a short form
Add a blog if you want to grow on Google over time.
3. Who writes the content?
Content is the most common reason websites get delayed. Decide early whether you will write it, or whether your designer should help. Simple, honest language — in English, Hindi or both — works better than corporate jargon.
Customers don’t read websites. They scan them. Short sentences win.
4. Template or custom design?
A template gets you online quickly, but your website will look like thousands of others. A custom design is planned around your customers and your brand, which usually builds more trust and converts better. If your logo and brand colours are not ready yet, sort those out first.
5. Will it be fast on a phone?
Most of your visitors will open your site on a mobile phone, often on a patchy connection. Ask your designer:
- Is the design mobile-first?
- How will images and fonts be optimised?
- What Google PageSpeed score do you aim for?
A slow website quietly loses customers before they see a single word.
6. Is it ready for Google?
SEO is not something you “add later”. A good build includes:
- A clear heading structure and unique meta title and description for every page
- Schema markup so Google understands your business
- A sitemap, Google Search Console and Google Business Profile setup
7. Who owns what?
This is the question most people forget to ask:
- Is the domain registered in your name?
- Do you get the website files and logins?
- Can you edit text and photos yourself without calling a developer?
If the answer to any of these is “no”, think twice.
Red flags when hiring a web designer
- No written scope. If pages, features and revisions are not written down, expect surprises later.
- No questions about your business. A good designer asks about your customers before talking about colours.
- No mention of mobile speed or SEO.
- No support after launch.
